The Body:This subject may not be very fun for some of us out there but trust me, a horse's body is way more fun to learn about than a human's.

We'll start with the heart. A horses heart is as big as a melon and it's heart rate is about 18 beats per minute. The adult horse's heart weighs about 9 pounds. Like a human's, a horse's heart has four chambers and it works basically the same as our's.

However, a horse's skeleton is not as similar to our's. Like us they have a large rib cage taking up most of their body and a stong back bone running down their back. However, their back bone is called a sacrum. And while they do have knees in their front legs, in their back legs they have what is called a hock. The hock is the place in the back legs where it looks kind of like a backwards knee and it juts out in the back. This leads us down to the hoof. under the hock there is a splint bone, then a cannon bone, a long pastern bone, and a short pastern bone, all leading down to the coffin bone. The coffin bone is the bone in the hooves. These bones are similar in the front legs under the knee.
